What Is Considered Oversized Cargo?

There are three main categories of oversized cargo:

Heavy cargo.
These are items whose weight exceeds the allowable load for the vehicle. The weight thresholds requiring oversized cargo transport rules vary depending on the number of axles. For example, a six-axle truck-trailer has a limit of 44 tons. For a two-axle tractor unit, it is 18 tons.
Oversized cargo.
If an object extends 400 mm beyond any side of the cargo bed, it falls into this category. Any cargo over 4 meters in height, including the platform, is also considered oversized.
Long cargo.
If the total length of a single truck exceeds 12 meters (20 meters for a truck-trailer), the transported item is classified as long cargo. The same applies to goods extending 1 meter in the front or 2 meters at the rear of the cargo bed.

If an item falls under any of these categories, its delivery must comply with oversized cargo transportation regulations.

What Is Required to Transport Oversized Cargo?

In addition, there are a number of oversized cargo transport rules that relate to driver conduct. For example, driving in fog or icy conditions is prohibited, as is sudden braking or raising road dust. Some regulations govern route planning. The route must not pass under power lines or low-hanging pipelines.

To comply with all oversized cargo transport regulations, one must have a systematic understanding of the laws in different countries and the ability to apply them in practice.
