What are the specifics of road freight transport?

Road freight is the most common method for delivering most types of cargo, accounting for about 80% of all shipments. It is well-suited for both domestic and international transportation.

Main advantages include:

Door-to-door delivery

Goods are loaded at the sender's location and delivered directly to the recipient without transshipment. This increases speed and enhances cargo safety.

Versatility

Trucks are suitable for transporting almost all types of cargo—from standard palletized goods to heavy and oversized items. A wide range of vehicle types allows selection of the optimal option for any task.

Mobility and flexibility

A widespread road network enables route planning that takes into account weather, road conditions, and other factors.

Optimal balance of cost and delivery time

High competition among carriers helps regulate prices and avoid overcharging. Trucks can also deliver goods quickly, especially over short to medium distances.

Same-day shipping availability

Unlike other delivery methods, road transport can often be arranged on the same day.

Despite its many advantages, road transportation is not always the best option. For long-distance routes or complex logistics, costs can be relatively high. There are also legal limits on daily driving distances, which may increase delivery time.

Alternatives to road transport include rail and air freight. Their main advantages are:

Rail freight

Ideal for long-distance transportation, especially if origin and destination are connected by direct railway lines. Rail shipping is relatively inexpensive and largely unaffected by weather or climate. Container train delivery may even be faster than road transport. Other advantages include safety, predictable schedules, and versatility. Disadvantages include more complex logistics, less developed infrastructure, and the need for cargo handling at transit stations.

Air freight

The fastest way to transport cargo over long distances. Ideal for urgent deliveries like medicines, scarce components, and live flowers. For many remote or hard-to-reach regions, air transport is the only viable option. The main disadvantage is the high cost.

Types of road freight transportation

Road cargo transportation is classified by several criteria. Depending on the volume of goods, it can be low-tonnage, high-tonnage, or consolidated. Transport can also be categorized by vehicle type. For international delivery, the most commonly used include:

Road trains with a tractor and semi-trailer
The most popular vehicles for long-haul transportation. Semi-trailers can be tarpaulin-covered (Euro trucks) or all-metal, carrying up to 24 tons and 105 m³ of cargo.
Isothermal vans and refrigerated trucks
Designed for cargo requiring specific temperature conditions. Isothermal vans maintain internal temperature, while refrigerated trucks regulate it using a cooling unit.
Road trains with trailers
These are vehicles with a tarpaulin body and a trailer. They can carry up to 30 tons and 120 m³ of cargo. Not suitable for transporting long items.
Lowbed trailers
Used for heavy and oversized cargo, including self-propelled machinery (bulldozers, excavators, etc.).
Tanker trucks
Used for transporting bulk liquids and liquefied cargo.
