Features of Rail Cargo Transportation

Rail transportation is in demand for shipping a wide range of cargo over medium and long distances. It is often ordered for sending equipment, machinery, cars, construction materials, and products of agricultural, mining, and metallurgical enterprises.

Rail cargo transportation has the following advantages:

Affordable cost

For long-distance routes, rail freight transportation is significantly cheaper than road and especially air transport

Independence from climate and weather conditions

Heavy precipitation, fog, ice, cold, or heat do not affect delivery speed. You can be confident that the cargo will arrive strictly on schedule

Geographical coverage

There are remote regions for which rail cargo transportation is the only way to deliver goods

Safety

Cargo transported by rail is reliably protected from damage and theft. Railcars are guarded both in transit and at stations

Rail freight transportation also has some drawbacks. First of all, they are related to limited infrastructure. Because of this, in most cases international rail freight is combined with other types of transport, primarily road transport. In such schemes, cargo is first transported by truck to a station or warehouse, then moved by train to the final station, and again loaded onto a truck for door-to-door delivery. Another downside is the relatively low average speed of rail freight transportation. By this parameter, rail transportation is inferior to road and especially air transportation.

Therefore, when organizing international delivery, we always offer clients alternative options:

Road transport

The most common method for short distances, but also frequently used on medium and even long routes. The main advantage is the possibility of door-to-door transportation in one vehicle without additional reloading. A wide network of roads allows delivery of goods between the most remote settlements. In terms of price-to-speed ratio, road transport often outperforms rail freight.

Air transport

The most expensive but fastest transport option. Usually chosen for small urgent shipments. These may be perishable goods (such as flowers or medicines), scarce spare parts, prototype samples, etc.

Types of Rail Freight Transport

Rail freight transport is quite a specific area of logistics. It requires highly qualified staff and extensive experience cooperating with market participants: government agencies, railway operators, freight station representatives, customs authorities. Otherwise, risks related to delivery delays, fines, and damage to valuable cargo may arise.

Cargo transportation is classified by several parameters. The main one is the method of cargo consolidation. The following delivery options are possible here:

Full wagon load
Cargo is allocated by wagons according to waybills. Each waybill corresponds to one wagon.
Groupage
Involves transporting cargo in several wagons under one waybill. If the goods occupy the entire train, such shipment is called a block train.
Small shipments
Refers to shipments weighing less than 10 tons, occupying no more than 1/3 of a wagon. If the cargo weighs from 10 to 20 tons and occupies no more than 50% of a wagon, rail transportation is considered small-tonnage.
Container shipments
The most common method for most types of rail cargo delivery. Goods are placed in universal containers transported on platforms. Thanks to regular container train movements between Europe and Asia, transportation times are reduced and tariffs remain attractive.
